Tough Vacation

travel delta airlines tail Not a happy Delta customer.
Well I got the situation escalated to a coordinator ( who is the equivalent of a manager?? ) at Delta. A southernly woman named Carla without any of the southern charms or hospitable manners. She was far less helpful than Robin and started to talk to me about policies. When I pleaded to her sense of empathy and asked her if she wouldn't be upset if she were in the same situation, her response threw me over the edge : "I don't let little things like this get to me."

Bye, Bye Pension

travel delta pilots Delta Airline Pilots learned the hard way about pension security.

In a recent instance, hundreds of retired Delta Airlines pilots learned their pension payments are coming to an end – at least until the PBGB comes across with its drastically reduced payments. Some even received bills for medical services that formally were taken out of their pension checks.

Way Too Early To Be On BART.

travel delta airlines Delta scores for this BART rider.

But I made it. Here I am on the flight to Atlanta, Georgia where I transfer to a small flight to Birmingham, Alabama, arriving five minutes before I left. Magically, I scored one of those coach seats just behind the first class wall, which means more leg room and only one person to my right. Not bad Delta Airlines, not bad. Perhaps the most surprising thing I found on Delta’s radio network is a station that plays electronic music. They also had a program where Elvis Costello is the MC. Someone is doing their job at Delta.

Airport Rant

travel tsa check Are we more secure?

Then before you get on the plane, there’s another security check. I’m not kidding, and what’s scary about this check is that they don’t even check everybody that gets on the plane. They pull random people out of line and check not just their luggage, but also everything on them including their clothes, their pockets and even their shoes. Of course, I know why, ever since Richard Reed hid a bomb in his shoe aboard a Delta airlines flight and everyone is paranoid that some Richard Reed fan club president might try to cop his idea, and they should be.

Back In The USA

travel delta airlines germany Some observations about Delta Airlines from a trip to Germany.

• Delta Airlines has very friendly service and pretty decent food. The "extras" on the plane--video service and so forth--left a great deal to be desired. Overall, I wouldn't be adverse to flying Delta to Europe again, but I'd try to book United, SAS, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, or any number of other carriers first.

Room For Annie

travel delta jet landing The story of finalizing the travel plans.

One month ago I made airline ticket reservations for our move to Orlando, but I could only purchase two tickets. Annie will travel with us, so we needed to get a confirmed reservation for her as well. Delta Airlines wasn’t responding with a confirmation right away, so we decided not to purchase all four tickets in case we had to find another airline on which to take Annie. For the last month only Cathy and Andrew had tickets to fly. Finally yesterday we got confirmation that Annie can travel with us, so now Audrey and I can go, too. Whew.

The Degrading Upgrade

travel delta airlines first class cabin Click through for an interesting strategy of upgrading on Delta Airlines.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. A couple of months ago my wife and I were flying back to Salt Lake City from a short trip to Manhatten. We flew on Delta airlines who’s hub happens to be Salt Lake City. We were tired and wanted a little extra room. I inquired about upgrading to first class since they made an announcement that there were 5 seats still available. The person at the counter said that because we had “internet” tickets we paid too little and so had a “T” ticket which wasn’t upgradeable for the $100 price they had announced. I asked how I might obtain a different ticket so that we could upgrade to first class. They said I could pay an additional $430 per ticket and then pay the $100 per ticket on top of that to upgrade to first class.

Left PanAmSat. Got a new job. No longer am I in over my head with Satcom gear. Now I’m in over my head being a webmaster for Delta. Technically. Actually, I work for Delta Technology, A wholy owned subsidiary of Delta Airlines. Still under bankruptcy no matter what the letterhead says. Anyway…I’m not really over my head that much. At least I understand Unix. It’s actually very interesting work. Maintaining Sun Java One Web Servers. It’s what I really like doing. I do want to learn a little programming. Very little. Enough to be dangerous but not much more. LOL. I guess that’s about it. Maybe I’ll start doing this regularly again. We’ll see.

Benefits You Can't Use

airlines delta gold medallion card Those times when marketing doesn't quite work right.

The airlines try so hard some times. Last year I flew a lot. I mean really a lot. So Delta Airlines, my all time favorite airline, awarded me their Gold Medallion status. That is the middle of three levels of status. It means some good benefits for me. I get upgraded to first class fairly often. I get to board early. And I get double mile credit for future free trips. Those are all benefits I can use and really enjoy. But I had to laugh today when my new "gold card" arrived. It came with four vouchers for my choice of a free headset, a free beer, a free glass of wine or a free cocktail on a future flight.

Here is a quick update to a post I created earlier regarding Delta Airlines restructuring plan. Delta: You're Lucky to Be Alive

travel delta airlines jet at gate Click through and fasten your seat belts for a bumpy read.

We thought, maybe, we could find someone who might offer us some coffee or similar to calm us after watching our plane catch fire, so we went around attempting to find a Delta representative who might be sympathetic, both to us and to the 300 people still stuck in line. Unfortunately, whenever anyone heard our story, all we were told was, "You have a new flight? Well, there's nothing I can do for you then. What more do you want?" Well, that's not true. One guy, a fine representative of Delta Airlines, told us, "What do you expect me to do about it? You're lucky the pilots knew what they were doing, or you could be dead right now."

Stranded!

travel delta jet The story of the missed connection.

Long story short (and really...thank me for sparing you the details) I missed a connecting flight* in Salt Lake City, Utah and did not get back to Phoenix today (*note that missing the flight was entirely the fault of Delta Airlines...that's D...E....L.....). I tried to get on several standby flights but was bumped from three of them before I gave up for the day and accepted the hotel vouchers from the airline. I reasoned that a good run on the hotel's treadmill and a strong drink would make up for the long day and all the hassel spent in the airport.

Tragically Unfunny

travel delta airlines pilot with chocolate If you want the definition of "tragically unfunny":

When I was 5, my dad - who is a pilot for Delta Airlines - came home from a trip late one Christmas Eve and told me and my brother that there wasn’t gonna be a Christmas this year because he hit Santa with his plane and he was dead. I mention this because Lindsay Lohan is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend and I’ll be forced to watch it and I was trying to think of something as tragically unfunny as SNL these days. NBC could probably save a lot of money and just show a live feed of a little kid with cancer in bed while he cries and hugs...

Risk Management - A Cautionary Tale

travel comair jet Good analysis of a problem that cost a lot of people time and money last year.

Mr. Ghost writes "By now many people have heard about the fiasco and financial blunder Comair had over the 2004 Christmas holiday. An article on CIO provides a timeline of the decisions that led up to the system failure costing the division of Delta Airlines $20 million. The article points out the need for proper risk management and what can occur when a risk analysis is not performed or ignored. It goes on to mention that although this was a very public failure, this type of system failure can occur in other companies." From the article: "The prospect...

Open Letter to Stewardess on Delta

travel delta airlines I'm conflicted on this post. Free speech is vital to a democracy, but common courtesy is vital to civilization.

A guy was kicked off a Delta Airlines flight by a stewardess for wearing a profane t-shirt. The guy posted an entry on his blog about the event and is now working on a draft letter to Delta to get the flight attendent reprimanded or fired. It is quite aggrevating to read the story and it really makes you wonder about free speech and censorship. The comments on his blog that follow the post are also very thought provoking. As many pointed out, the t-shirt may have been inappropriate but censorship in the name of religion is a whole different issue.

Over the River & Through the Woods to Grandmother's House We Go...

travel delta on approach Is someone pulling our leg:

The trip began in the Delta Airlines section of the new Seatac Terminal A. It's a big, bright and airy new building with a portion of the floor to ceiling windows adorned with an extraordinary, brightly colored mural which appears to be based on medieval folktales (I'm just hazarding a guess here). Here's what Jonathan Lerner has to say about it in his Delta Sky magazine article, City of Glass:

Livin on the edge

delta airline Delta has fired employees for posting about their work lives on blogs.

He isn’t the first either. There was a woman from Delta airlines and a programmer from Friendster who also lost their jobs for that very reason. And lets not forget the guy who snapped pictures of Apple computers getting hauled into Microsoft. I would have done the same thing, I mean how can you stare irony in the face and not capture it for posterity (and all your web friends)? What ever happened to free speech? The scary thing is, no one has filed a lawsuit. I would venture to guess the only reason they haven’t is because they can’t.

Delta Airlines Needs More Legroom

travel delta airline meal This blogger wants more legroom on Delta.

I left Dallas on a Thursday. I found a good deal on Yahoo! travel that I couldn’t pass up. I would be flying from Dallas to Atlanta and then on to Dublin. I arrived in Atlanta feeling like Mr. World Traveler. I was ready to relax a bit during my layover and make this a nice trip, even given the fact that Delta Airlines has about half the legroom on their planes than American. So, my opinion about Delta Airlines? You suck. No wonder you’re going bankrupt.
