Things Get Worse for Alitalia

travel air france klm tails This traveler writes about the woes of Alitalia after it lost out to Air France/KLM.

The Italian government did finally decide to pick the Air France/KLM deal as their favorite, so the two airlines entered into talks. Then, the Italian government collapsed. Oh boy. There’s lots of speculation that the collapse of the government means that this deal is in trouble, but we really don’t know. The players all deny that this will hurt anything.

Appelle Moi Mariangela

travel air france charles de gaulle An Air France adventure at de Gaulle airport.

Entro Giugno Alitalia Sara' Privatizzata

travel air france take off More changes in the European skies, with Air France eyeing Alitalia.

Can Airbus Catch Up?

travel air france airbus 318 From a post on the competition between Airbus and Boeing.

A lot has changed over the past twelve months. The price of fuel has spiraled and the need for fuel efficiency has morphed from being important to critical in terms of airline operations. Fuel surcharges have ameliorated some of the pain. But, as pointed by Air France’s CEO, sudden fuel price shocks cannot be handled easily since airfares are already contracted. Airline operations are based around a similar business model to that of supermarkets. The customer pays cash while the supplier holds off paying vendors for 120 days or more. This is a great model when business is stable because the middle man (airline or supermarket) builds up a cash mountain. Since airfares are paid in advance of the flight, any item (like fuel) that costs a lot more at the time of service delivery really eats into that mountain quickly.

Move Brussels To Strasburg?

travel eu hq strasburg Good news for Air France.

Many MEPs, sick of having to place themselves in the clumsy hands of Air France each month, want to end the Strasburg sittings. But there is no way that this can happen: the French have managed to sneak a clause into the Treaties specifying that the Parliament must meet in Strasburg twelve times a year. This commitment cannot now be removed without the unanimous consent of all 25 states; and there is no way that France will give its consent.

Airline Travel For Vegetarians

travel air france food It's probably good French food on Air France, but it's probably not vegetarian.

The words ‘France’ and ‘vegetarian’ don’t sit together too comfortably. As if to confirm this, I couldn’t find a single reference to the word ‘vegetarian’ on the Air France web site! I had a very helpful reply to my email enquiry though, informing me that they offer vegetarian or vegan meals, which need to be requested 48 hours in advance. Given that Air France allocate 560 million euros to their in-flight catering every year, I’m glad to know that vegetarians are taken into account.

Family Visit To France

travel air france Click through for a great tour of France with the family.

I landed at CDG @10:30 AM. The regular gate was not available so we parked on the tarmac, deplaned by stairs and were bussed to the terminal. Took the Air France shuttle bus to Gare Montparnasse. Traffic was horrendous. I made my train with only 5 minutes to spare. I was so pressed for time I did not stamp my ticket. The TGV train left the station at 2:10 PM; it was a non-stop trip Angouleme arriving at 4:15 PM. As I walked on the platform toward the station, Leah came to greet me. It was so good to hug my daughter again. As we approached the van, Petey did a double take. When Andy opened the door, out Petey flew—he was excited.

Flying To Stockholm

travel stockholm Click through for more photos and the continuting travel journal.

‘Ok! Here is the first posting as i promised. As you can tell i made it to Sweden. My flight (Air France) was pretty smooth for the most part to Paris. I was not too impressed by Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris. It looked old and confusing. No one really there to help passengers get to their connecting flights. But i liked the French clothing style even at 5am. Stockholm is small with 1 mil population only but historic and cute. So far everyone is friendly. Here are some of the photos i took today. To enlarge the photos just click on them. Enjoy! Feel free to post comments.

Korea For Three Hours

travel korean air 747 landing Korean Air apparently beats Air France service.

The flight was incredible. It was no 747 but a 777 so there was no upper deck but still Business Class on Korean seems to be better than First on Delta/Air France. A full meal was served during the less than three hours flight. I opted for a traditional korean meal named Bibimbap. Multiple bowls to mix, tasty white wine and a refreshing fruit salad. On the flight itself I did not watch a movie but took a look at Mt. Fugi and the land below me in general. Photos will follow but I checked-in my cardreader.

Spate Of Crashes

travel air france crash toronto Lots of speculation on whether the recent spate of airline crashes is coincidence.

What’s causing all these crashes? Bad weather caused the Air France mishap in Canada and for the most recent one in Peru. But maybe some of these planes are just too old, so they’re more sensitive to weather problems! Look at the recent Helios Airliner crash in Greece–even bad weather wasn’t needed for that plane to just fall from the sky!

Air France Flight 358 Crash

travel air france demolished jet toronto An update on the Air France crash in Toronto. Amazing that no one was killed.

The aircraft that crashed was an Air France A340 carrying 297 passengers and 12 crew members. Air France flight 385 took off from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France and crashed at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada. The A340 is less than six years old and had only 28,418 hours. There were no passenger of crew fatalities and only 43 injuries. The reason for the crash is still unknown, but the recovery of the black box is reportedly going to give to insight into the reason of the crash. The Air France flight landed with an applause but 10 seconds after the touchdown the passengers noticed the plane was not stopping, when the aircraft ran out of runway it crashed into a ravine. The plane was able to deplane in 2 minutes with three quarters of the passengers deplaned in 52 seconds. After all the passengers had deplaned a fire started which took 12 hours for ground crews to extinguish.

Going Places

travel jfk airport Nice story of adolescent fantasies of flight.

My adolescence was filled with frequent bus trips to LAX and JFK, where I furtively collected airline schedules. I walked back and forth past the check-in counters, trying to blend in with the real travelers until the ticket agents were sufficiently busy and I could surreptitiously sweep a timetable off the counter. I carried my treasures home and memorized their contents. AeroPeru, Air France, Qantas and Royal Air Moroc. The names were as tantalizing to me as quaaludes, acid and speed were to some of my Hollywood High School classmates. Departures and arrivals, class of service, non-stop or direct. Each symbol and code were magical because they could transform an awkward, selfless, self-hating teenage nothing into the sophisticated world traveler that I would someday be.

Livery And Brand Identity

travel air france livery business class seats Some history on airlines and their livery:

Well, the first set of airline livery started to appear shortly after the Second World War – with the same intention that continues to this day - to identify the corporation/airline flying the plane. At the outset, European airlines -like BOAC and Air France- took up the mantel. However, never ones to see a good marketing ploy pass them by, American airlines soon followed suit.

Air France Wins Domain Case

travel air france 777 taxi It doesn't seem very confusing to me.

Air France has won the rights to the domain name AirFranceSucks.com from a Florida company that held it since 1999. Earlier this year the airline brought the case before the World Intellectual Property Organization, which ruled that adding " 'sucks' to a trademark will generally be confusingly similar to that trademark."

Hoax Travel Ads

travel air france transatlantys fake ad When hoaxes work, they can make for great marketing:

i discovered through chryde and hoaxbuster, that this is not less not more than a fake ad by SNCF to promote they flight between NY and Paris. Smart Marketers: if i was not so curious about reading other blogs i would have never discovered the truth and the buzz around your ad would have been a total flop on me. At any moment there is a possibility to understand who is the advertiser: it could have been air france/ easy jet/ lastminute.com. So think twice : a hoax can be good if it can be related directly and simply to the advertiser and its brand...

A380 Flies!

travel airbus 380 This maiden flight was a big deal! Air France is among the airlines that have made an order for the super-sized plane.

The world's largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, took its maiden flight Wednesday, cruising over the Pyrenees mountains in an aviation milestone that Europe's jetliner maker hopes will give it a leg up in its battle with American rival Boeing Co.

The double-decked plane, which can carry 840 passengers, landed to applause at 2:22 p.m. (8:22 a.m. EDT) after a flight of nearly four hours. About 30,000 spectators watched the white plane with blue tail take off and touch down, 101 years after the Wright brothers achieved the first controlled, sustained flight.
