Northwest Pilot Blog

travel northwest air blog A former Northwest pilot blogs away. Inside travel info here!

As a former pilot for Northwest Airlines, I have spent a great deal of time on various technology initiatives, always with the intent of improving the information flow between the aircraft and the enterprise. Think about it - the aircraft is the only thing in the airline industry that really makes any money. Yet it's the one part of the business that is disconnected from the overall enterprise network. In any other industry, this would be unacceptable. But in this industry, it's the way we've operated since the beginning.

I completely agree that it is not fair enough for the union to ask for more money from the customers. It will only ruin their business

Unions seem to think they can ask for any amount of money they want. However, companies do not set prices, the market does. You cannot force customers to pay whatever price unions want toso they can have any salary they want. Unions make prices so high that customers limit their flying or go to a competitor for the service. Do I feel sorry for NW pilots that make $250k a year to fy one international flight a month....NO!

Amigo:

If only a NWA captain could make $250k and fly one flight! Do consider this: nobody can have their family budget slashed in bankruptcy as the NWA (and Delta) pilots have. I'm not sure how much you make, but try this: divide it by three, then subtract that amount from you budget. Can you still pay your bills?

I also only wish unions set prices--we don't! But consider the risk involved in the job--which is your risk as well when you fly--and decide if it's worth the ticket price and the pilot pay.
